Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, is a condition that affects millions of people world-wide. Excessive sweating can occur in various parts of the body, including underarms, hands or feet. Whilst high temperatures, stress and exercise can increase perspiration, it does not cause Hyperhidrosis. This is a specific, medical condition, often genetically inherited.
When used to treat excessive underarm sweating, the injected solution blocks the release of the chemical responsible for triggering perspiration. After the first treatment, the effects typically last for eight months. However the duration often varies from patient to patient. When Hyperhidrosis symptoms return, further treatments are required.
The side effects of the injections are generally temporary with the most common being a perceived increase in sweating in other areas of the body and general tenderness at the injection site.
