Breast augmentation: a very personal decision
Many women consider having breast surgery because their breasts either didn’t fully develop, or they developed unevenly. Some have experienced changes in their breast size and shape after pregnancy or weight change, or simply with age. It’s all relative but the decision to go ahead with surgery should be personal.
Whatever your reasons for considering breast implants, it is important to remember that the decision is yours alone. You should never consider having breast surgery to please someone else.
About the surgery
Breast augmentation surgery – Mammaplasty – is done using silicone implants to increase the size or improve the shape of the breasts. The procedure is done under general anaesthetic and has been performed on more than three million women worldwide. Over the last five decades, a vast majority of women who have had the procedure have been very pleased with the results.
Breast implant surgery can increase the size and correct uneven breasts. It is also used to correct drooping breasts, however, this particular concern may require a Mastopexy (breast lift) as an additional procedure.
Breast implants are filled with a silicone gel solution, which provides a more natural feel and is less likely to cause rippling. Most surgeons use cohesive gel silicone implants, which do not ripple as easily or leak if the shell is damaged.
Silicone implants need a slightly longer access incision to place them, however, Dr Briggs uses the Keller funnel technique to keep the incision short. It’s a no-touch method, which is twice as surgically sterile and produces the same results as the more invasive procedure. Incisions are made underneath the breasts and the breast implants are placed under the chest muscles.
Successful breast enlargement surgery begins with a consultation. Dr Briggs will take you through the careful planning process of reaching your goal. In the privacy of our Perth-based clinic he will show and discuss the different options, advising you on the best choice for your particular body shape and height.
Discussing the size of your breast implants can be a confusing decision and requires careful consideration; one cup size may look quite different on two women of the same stature. You will try on various sized bras with fillers to give you a clearer indication of which implants would be appropriate for your size. Remember, your goal is to find a size that looks both natural, pleasing and proportionate.
Finally, you’ll discuss the risks related to breast augmentation and what you should expect during your recovery.
After your surgery
Pain and discomfort is normal post-surgery. There will be some swelling and bruising for the next one to two weeks and scars will remain red for a few months, and then fade. If you need it, we’ll provide you with pain relief for a few days after the procedure.
Strenuous athletic activities should be restricted for at least six weeks after surgery.
Risks of breast implants
There are risks involved with all types of surgeries. During your consultation, we’ll discuss these with you. With the right surgeon, correct guidance and advice, the majority of women have reported that they are delighted with the result.
